June 21st marks the summer solstice, which is when the Earth is at a point in its orbit where one hemisphere is most tilted towards the sun. Because of the tilt the sun appears at 23.45 degrees above the celestial equator, thus making its highest path across the sky causing the longest daylight period and hence the shortest night. This day usually occurs on June 21/June 22 in the northern hemisphere and on December 21/December 22 in the southern hemisphere. The actual date changes due to differences between the calendar year and the tropical year (the amount of time it takes for the Earth to make its ecliptic orbit around the Sun).

For the northern hemisphere: The earth's axis is tilted, and on June 21 the axis tilts in the direction of the sunlight. For the southern hemisphere: The southern end of the earth's axis factors in the direction of the sunlight on Dec. 21, making that the longest day in places south of the equator.

It is the summer solciste. This is the day were the earth is the closest to the sun on its way around in an eliptical orbit. In the northern hemisphere the earth is exposed to the suns rays for a longer duration of time.

It is for people in the Northern Hemisphere because that's when the NH is tilted the most toward the sun, so the rays are shining on the widest area for the longest.

It's not the logest, really is it? The summer solstice is only the one with the longest sunlight. Right?
