It depends, some smell of food, others have that body odor and cologne/purfume smell because they are trying to cover up the smell, and others wee and poo in their pants. Plus when you get that old all of your senses start to go, so they don't know that they smell that way. And if you think about it the longer you have something the more it smells and if they have been around for 80 or 90 years well yeah they are going to start to smell.

I think it's the smell of death. I've smelled it in many places, on many people, some of whom were fastidiously clean and well groomed. Your body ages, and I think (no proof) that at some point, it simply starts to die on a cellular level, not regenerating as quickly as it once did, and so the smell starts. I know that I've smelled it in retirement homes, when visiting the residents, and when I worked for the Post Office and would deliver the mail, and that when my mother passed away, by the time I went to see her at the mortuary about 6 hours after her death, it was almost overpowering... I don't know that everyone smells it, but I can, and evidently you can, too...

It's not reaaly that they don't care, but put yourself in their place. You are old and living alone. You are nervous about getting into a shower and slipping on the mat. Who do you call for help?
Many older people have such bad arthritis that it hurts for them to even scratch a shoulder or apply ointment to a knee . Also it's the food they eat and the lack of control of the bladder or gas.

they lose their sence of smell and therefore think they're OK. That's why some old men wear too much cologne and old women have on too much dusting powder. But, so what. Just notice them and give them a smile. Someday it'll be you.
