I would contact my waste hauler first to see if they would even take the old insulation.
Next question is why remove it? If it is not seriously water damaged, there is no reason to remove it. If you are looking to put more insulation in, just go over the old stuff. (particularly if you are looking to use 'blown in' insulation)
If your waste hauler will take the old batting, you want some big garbage bags, and long gloves... a dust mask, and safety goggles would be a good idea too.
Assuming you are going to remove the old batten from the attic space, you will want to toss some boards across your rafter joists, to walk on....you don't want to go thru the ceiling, lol.. and take it slow, with lots of breaks... it's going to get hot and stuffy up there, with lots of dust in the air.
If you are going to remove it from the room below the ceiling...throw plastic over EVERYTHING, after removing what furniture you need to, to be able to move freely.
Once you have the batten in your garbage bags, here's a little trick to make the bags take up less space.....you can put a screen over the end of your vacuum hose, and vacuum out the air in the bag....providing you didnt put any holes in the bags, hehe. Oh, its a good idea to use bags that will go thru the opening you are using to access the attic space, lol... wouldnt be of much help to use a 50 gallon trash bag, if your access is only 2ft square, lol. Once you have the air out of the trash bag, then seal it off tight, to keep the air from getting back into it. You can toss the bags into a cardboard box, and tape the box shut... then even if the bag does 're-inflate', the box will contain it. Don't just put the deflated bags into your trash can... lol... the garbage man won't be able to dump them out... heheheh
It's a dirty and hot job cleaning out old batten... like I said.. take lots of breaks...wear long sleeve shirts, full length pants, socks etc... with long gloves (vinyl gloves work well, but there are others), safety goggles, and a dust mask. You will dehydrate if working in the heat for very long, so drink plenty of water. If, I say if... but it is almost a certainty you will, get any of the batten on you, and it starts to make you itch...(most fiberglass batten will) .. a cold shower will help relieve the itch. It will also close up the pores on your skin preventing the fiberglass from getting any deeper, and causing you to itch even more.
Good Luck!
