Tell me - what is the value of one-half of two-thirds of three-quarters of four-fifths of five-sixths of six-sevenths of seven-eights of eight-ninths of nine-tenths of one thousand?

P.S. ~ and yes, there is a real mathematical answer/explanation to this problem. The task is can you tell me what that answer/explanation is?

9/10 of 1000 = 900 8/9 of 900 = 800 7/8 of 800 = 700
6/7 of 700 = 600 5/6 of 600 = 500 4/5 of 500 = 400

3/4 of 400 = 300 2/3 of 300 = 200 1/2 of 200 = 100

that would be 1/2 X 2/3 X 3/4 X 4/5 X 5/6 X 6/7 X 7/8 X 8/9 X 9/10 X 1000 = 100.

This is so easy you should be able to do it in your head.

1/2 x 2/3 x 3/4 x 4/5 x 5/6 x 6/7 x 7/8 x 8/9 x 9/10 x 1000.

It's easy to see that the denominators are cancelled by the succeeding numerator. (2, 3, 4, 5... 8, 9 all cancel).

So you are left with:
1/10 x 1000

One tenth of a thousand is:
= 100

Rewrite this into numbers
= (1/2) (2/3) (3/4) (4/5) (5/6) (6/7) (7/8) (8/9) (9/10) (1000)

cancel 2,3,4,5,6,7,8, and 9
= 1000/10

Simplify
= 100

You need not multiply all, because it will just reach millions. Multiplication is commutative. Cancelling means disregarding common factors of both the numerator and denominator to lessen the work^_^

There is some cancellation that takes place.

The 1 stays, the 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, 6's, 7's, 8's, and 9's cancel, the 10 stays, and the 1000 stays.

Thus, the statment above is equivalent to 1000/10, which is 100.

Let's see...

1000 is the start number, right?

so 9/10 of 1000 is 900.

8/9 of 900 is 800

7/8 of 800 is 700

6/7 of 700 is 600

5/6 of 600 is 500

4/5 of 500 is 400

3/4 of 400 is 300

2/3 of 300 is 200

and 1/2 of 200 is 100.

so, what's the maths answer?

God, this is not for masters!!!

1/2*2/3*...*9/10*100
Using the rules of multiplication, you can scratch all numbers except the 1 and 10. All others appear both multiply and divided so you can basically ignore them. Doing so you get:

(1/10)*100
100/10
10 (and you don`t even need a calculator)
