On November 13, 2005, Guerrero was found dead in his hotel room in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at the Marriott City Center Hotel by his nephew, Chavo. He was 38 years old.
An autopsy revealed that Guerrero died as a result of acute heart failure, caused by undiagnosed arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease and enlargement of the heart as a result of prior anabolic steroid abuse. Although Guerrero had not taken alcohol or illicit drugs for over four years, his past excesses contributed to his heart failure. At the time of his death, he had recently used narcotic painkillers.

On the morning of November 13, 2005, Chavo Guerrero checked into a hotel with his uncle, Eddie Guerrero, in Minneapolis where they were both scheduled be a part of a planned WWE RAW and SmackDown! "Supershow". After Eddie missed a wake-up call, security opened his hotel room and Chavo found his uncle unconscious. Chavo attempted CPR, but 38-year-old Eddie was declared dead at the scene. Vickie Guerrero, Eddie's wife, later announced that an autopsy ruled the cause of death to be massive heart failure. Although he had been sober for four years, his past drug and alcohol problems had taken their toll on Guerrero, as had his gruelling wrestling work and WWE schedule.
Eddie died on the day that he had a match for the World Heavyweight Championship versus then-champion Batista and Randy Orton -- a match which many wrestling fans contend that Guerrero was scheduled to win, thus becoming a two-time world champion. The company held tributes to Guerrero on both RAW and SmackDown during the week following his death. On April 1, 2006 at the WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremonies during WrestleMania 22 weekend, Guerrero's wife Vickie accepted his posthumous induction into the WWE Hall of Fame by Rey Mysterio, Chris Benoit and Chavo Guerrero.
Following Guerrero's death, Vince McMahon announced a new drug policy under which performers would be subject to random drug tests by an independent company and would receive regular medical physicals with an emphasis on cardiovascular health. The announcement of the new drug policy was also made shortly after another WWE wrestler, Nick "Eugene" Dinsmore, was found passed out in a hotel lobby due to alleged use of Somas.
Though the Guerrero tribute shows were well received, WWE has controversially used Guerrero's name in several recent storylines - most notably the feud between Randy Orton and Guerrero's good real-life friend Rey Mysterio. After a month of Mysterio dedicating matches to Guerrero, Orton challenged Mysterio, saying Guerrero wasn't in Heaven, but "down there, in Hell" and that Mysterio had as much chance of winning the World Heavyweight Championship as there was a chance of Guerrero coming back to life. Mysterio later won the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22 in a Triple Threat match with Orton and Kurt Angle, but several wrestlers publicly criticized the angle, and many fans have expressed outrage over the continued use of Guerrero's name in storylines. However, Guerrero's friend, Chris Benoit, has stated in interviews that he isn't offended by the use of Guerrero's name in WWE storylines.

First off lets clear up the rumors right now. Eddie did not die of a drug overdose. He was clean for a few years at the time of his death. Eddie died of heart disease brought by his years of drug and alcohol abuse. Eddie had advanced stage heart disease and narrowing of the blood vessels that supplied blood to his heart. Eddie's death should be a message to any of you kids out there who think that Drugs are not going to get you, THEY WILL! Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but down the road you Pay for the Abuse you do to your body.
