It might be "and he staggered.." Should be before approx 1950. Suspect book, but might be play or song ; please give the work and author.

The question has not been answered. (I have checked two versions of the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner"--the phrase is not there.)

My dad used to quote this whenever he left the house. It started with "We're off" the CAPTAIN shouted AND THEN THERE WAS SOMETHING ABOUT A RING TAIL MONKEY SLIDING DOWN THE BRASS POLE.

It sounds so familiar. It might be "Sloop John..." song...
I checked Google books and it's not from any book they've downloaded.
I suspect its from a poem orsong as it has meter.

I am inclined to agree with others that it is remiscent of "Moby Dick" said by Captain Ahab.
