Crawl under the dash and look at the vent/defrost control switch. If it has hoses connected to it, it is vaccum controlled and you should track down the main vaccum that goes into the driver's compartment to make sure it has vaccum. Then go from there. Probably a broken vaccum line. If it has wires only going to it, it is electronically controlled. The gears will break on the damper control assemblies. Ask more questions when you get it narrowed down.

What kind of car do you have? Most cars have a motor that moves a door to select the vent it will blow out of... Let me know what kind of car & I will see if I can help more......
