Drug overdose. Died out on the sidewalk in front of the club that Johnny Depp used to own, the Viper Room.

he died of a drug overdose at a club called the Viper Room at the age of 23 on October 31st 1993, he had only celebrated his 23rd b-day 2 months before.
At the time he was with his younger brother Joaquin Phoenix made the 911 call (who acted in Gladiator and Walk the Line), one of his sisters, Johnny Deep (who partly owned the club) and the bass player Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers who sat with him in the ambulance on they way to hospital.
River died like 40mins later he had taken high doses of drugs and it lead to his heart to fail.
Flea had urged him to get help for his drug problems before he died but he wasn't ready.
It sad because he was so young, really caring person and had a bright future ahead of him.
