I had one recently and the nurse performed it painlessly.I said this to her and she explained that they now use smaller needles that have a special sort of film on them so that they glide in a lot easier now. I used to have a terrible phobia about needles now in a sadistic sort of way i look forward to them because i'm really proud that i was able to overcome it

Lie back and think of Johnny Depp. The Nurse thought it was funny when I said that....! :P

No really, I had my first one ever the other day. I did feel a bit scared, but I forced myself to relax my arm as tensing muscles only makes you feel it more. I sat down for my test, but made sure I slouched back against the wall incase I did pass out!

I guess it depends on whether it's the needles, or the thing sticking in your arm that bothers you. Needles and jabs don't worry me at all, but I sure as hell wouldn't give blood!

Perhaps get into a routine - maybe concentrate on singing a song while having it done. Think of a funny sketch by a comedian, Monty Python, fawlty Towers - anything that's had you in stitches. Close your eyes and keep your breathing regular.
Or get defiant - I was saying "come on then!" to myself while having it done, being careful to keep my breathing in check.

But then I might have found the test just a tiny bit easier as my Dad was in intensive care 6 months ago. This forced me to go beyond my comfort zone - I hated hospitals. Now I feel a bit braver and more capable of coping with shitty health things.

Good luck with fighting the phobia!

Hiya i used to have to have alot of blood tests. I'm a wimp so they put some cream on, they called it magic cream and is designed to numb the pain!
I also didn't look, i just looked the other way at the fit doctor hehe
Why not take a friend with you or a familt member!

1. Don't look.
2. Bring a friend with you.
3. Talk while they do the test.
4. If all else fail, then let them do the test while you were unconcious.

Good Luck!

I used to do that.I just told them that I faint when I get blood tests and they got this nasty smelling salt before they even started.I would suggest sitting down until you don't feel dizzy anymore.I faced my fear when I did a blood donation.

Tell them you faint, and ask if you can lie down while they do it - it's impossible to faint while lying down!

Why not hook up with that other guy while your man's on holiday? That'll take your mind off things..
