I am 22 years old and I don't know why my friends (and even my primary care doctor) are surprised when they find out I don't have a gyn. I'm not sexually active nor do I have period problems. Why are people so surprised? I don't see the big deal.

Women are supposed to see the gynecologist when they are 18 or sexually active, which ever is first. Although everything seems normal to you, you should still get a yearly pap test to make sure. There could be things that you can't detect, like cancerous cells, etc. Its best to just play it safe and see a gynecologist.

For some very good reasons! There are several cancers that are detectable early through Gyn exams..... Doesnt matter if you are sexually active or not. Further, by having a regular Gyn, you have established a baseline younger in your life, when you are "healthy" - makes it easier to detect subtle changes as the years go by..... certainly not a waste of time or money

Girl because your parts down there are pretty intricate....your family dr is saying see someone that specilizes in this. Having sex or not you don't know if something internally could be wrong. Having a yearly pap smear can show your gyno stuff that your regular doc is going to see on a check up. It's good to keep you body heathly and for us women that is a necessary. Find a good GYN once you go you will wonder why it took you so long!

You don't need to be sexually active in order to need a gyno. Every woman who has begun menstruating on a regular basis should start seeing a gynecologist at least once a year, if only to make sure that everything is ok. Women's bodies are especially complex, and it takes a specialist to truly ensure that things are working the way they should. Even sexually inactive women are liable to get urinary tract infections , yeast infections, polyps, breast cancer, cervical cancer, fibroids, etc.

Most insurance plans include checkup visits to the gyno (and subsequent treatment if needed) so please go.

It's important to get a PAP test every year, starting at age 21 even if you haven't become sexually active. It checks for changes in the cells in the cervix, and can help detect cancer before it is too late.

You still need to get PAP testing done. Cervical cancer is very common nowadays, even if you are sexually inactive. The cancer is caused by a virus. You could contract the virus from virtually anywhere!

Plus, it is important that your reproductive organs are in good shape. When you get married and want to start a family, you want to be in good shape. A gynecologist can ensure that you are ready and healthy for child rearing.

iam your same age and i just got my first pap smear because i got married and got pregnant. I didnt have a gyno until now. And still its a midwife and not a real dr.

I think its bull crap to have someone probing around in that area, ESPECIALLY if you're not sexually active. I certainly didnt suffer from it.

Preventive medicine is a load of bull crap. I almost died from meningitis because i just HAD to have a vaccine to prevent it.

I firmly believe that if you're healthy and not broken you dont need a doctor. They've never done anything but tried to kill me.

Anyone who tells you to run to the doctor simply lives their life in fear of every known illness.

Because once you turn 18 you should see one.

All women should see a OB/GYN after the first time they have sex or when they turn 18 whatever comes first. I guess you don't HAVE to, but he/she is only there to make sure everythings ok, you'd think you'd want that validation
