I think that you need feed back about your site and the products tha you are selling on it - a question air about both of these would help. You need to know if you site is easy to use and weather its welcoming enough. Humans are inherently lazy and their won't use something that they have to put to much effort in to using/ getting to know. Most give up if it involves too much effort - the I can't be bothered with this pops up if it goes like that.

To do this we'd have to look at the website. What are you selling? How are you marketing it? Are you getting 5000 hits? Or visits?

There is a difference. 5,000 hits isn't necessarily 5,000 visits. The visits are actually more important. Without looking at stats or the site your question is hard to answer.

could it be that your layout is not appealing? or that your products are not in demand? or your prices are too high?
