I have a 96 Mazda 626 ES with a V6. I need an ignition distributor but I know almost nothing about cars.
Why are there more than one whenever i look the part up on the internet?
The prices range from 170 to almost 400.00.
I thought that there was only one engine type made for my version of the Mazda 626 so why is there more than one distributor? Is it a size thing or just name brand difference.

I find the same situation with my Hondas. It seems they built the cars with whatever supplies they were stocked with and at some point in the production year, the supplier had switched brands or something. I really don't know exactly why this is.

Anyway... When I look for parts I tend to stick to the ones with adequate pictures and they generally provide them when a car is known to have more than one type of the same part. Personally, I like shopping for parts at www.drivewire.com and have found them to be the cheapest for factory replacement parts. I looked up your car and found them to offer only one ignition distributor.

The caps of one brand of distributor usually do not look exactly like the brand of another. You can take a long hard look at the details of your distributor cap, i.e. round or square, round with a square sticking off the side etc., and match it up this way. It will have to be a match or the wiring connector may not mate or the corresponding mechanical connection to the camshaft may not mate either though I doubt that as the distributor manufacturer would have to supply a distributor that will work with the current engine design.

I hope you know enough about your car to fully know you DO need a distributor... I have several old cars and not one has ever had to have it's expensive distributor replaced. I've replaced leaking seals and plenty of rotors and caps and even some internal parts but never the whole darn thing. Maybe if you described why you need a new distributor, I could help you out further.

Good luck!

first of all it would depend on the type of transmission that you have, standard or automatic? There are two different types of ignition distributors for each model. Then it depends on the type of engine you have, I am assuming that you have a 626 FI-ES, but you also have the FI-LX and the 626/MX6. There are design differences between the standard and automatic transmissions which require different ignition distributors.

Use your cars VIN number whenever you need parts, this will tell the parts man what he needs to know so he ordes the correct part for you.

I looked this part up for you at this site, they run $200 and up but only asked me if it was a 4cyl or 6 cylinder. (2 different 4 cylinders, only 1- 6 cylinder)

sometimes there are design changes, one of those might be used and the other new , and there might have been a choice of several engines available in that Mazda,,,
