For random dates in July using pointandtravel.com and Orbitz ... comes out to around $1027 with all taxes. Going through LAX and returning through Boston. For dates in July it will be tough to beat that by much. If you find something much cheaper post it here.

Fares to London aren't as cheap this Summer as they sometimes have been in the past. Include Bristol and Manchester in your search, and you might find something significantly cheaper. If you do, add a bus trip with National Express or Megabus to get you to central London.
Also, if you could go from LAX, check Air New Zealand. They often have specials on their LAX-Heathrow roundtrip flight.

Book the ticket for the day before you actually want to leave. Get to the airport early and get bumped. You will then be able to fly on the day you actually want to leave, and the airline will compensate you for your "sacrifice".
