It is WELL worth the trip. If you have the time, try to visit Banff, and Lake Louise and Jasper national parks. Calgary is a wonderful city, are you going to be going during the Stampede? THat is a great time to visit Calgary.
You won't run into much traffic at all on your trip. If Kelowna, BC is on your way that is a very nice town to stop in.

You might want to consider the Rocky Mountaineer train.
It runs from Vancouver to Calgary with stops at some of the region's most scenic areas including Bannf and Jasper. They have full package options or just straight trips.
The big advantage to the train of course is that you can gawk at amazing scenery and the route takes you places no car could ever, especially if you chose to drive the Coquihalla highway, which isn't nearly as scenic.
The train of course is a hge part of Cdn history - as that is what led to our confederation and opened up the West. Lots of history and beauty, plus no driving, no hassles. (PS gas prices are considerably higher her if you are coming from the States)

it is approximately at 13 hours straight drive from Calgary to Vancouver. I did it with my husband 16 years ago. You may want to check the route for a half way point to spend the ight...why rush it. If you take the Coquilhalla route there is no getting off till you pay your toll at the BC exit. Have Fun and be safe.

It is a long drive, however there are so many beautiful things to see on the way. Take your time and do some sight seeing on the way. I personally think you could easily spend 2 weeks doing this trip. Theres no reason to hurry is there?
