Why is it assumed that those who consider themselves 'goth' would be suicidal or harm themselves in some way?

It has more to do with the fact that some people stand out and give the rest a bad name. The same goes with homosexual men. If you're gay, you're a flamer that lives in San Francisco, which is completely untrue, but it's the typical stereotype that goes with the territory. "Goth" actually comes for "Gothic" which was a very beautiful time period in world history. Look it up, and next time someone tells you you're suicidal, use the historical facts as proof instead of trying to explain that not all Goths are like that. Most people won't understand, but it will bring a smile to your face!

Most people assume that goths are more likely to self-harm, although self-mutilators are more actually more likely to become goth, not the reverse, says a recent study. It only makes sense, though: many goths have had emotional problems, and goths are a very unjudgemental species. The media reversed the cause and effect, saying that 'getting into goth' will cause people to bring harm to themselves, although most goths are very well-adjusted, perhaps more so than most 'normal' people.

the literature 'gothic' applies to the unusual and eerie. It is dark and/or scary and associated with death and menace. In historical terms the Goths (originally from germany) overran and took an important part in subverting the Roman empire. The Gothic race were considered uncivilised and barbarian....but i think nowadays groups of modern "goths" just seem outcast and unhappy...see said music preferences and penchant for morbid attire and deathlike pale faces.

When you see a group of Goth you judge a book by it's cover. You see young people shaving their hair in these weird cuts, piercings all over their bodies and make-up like they are dead. People on the outside looking in see this as a bunch of young people doing self torture wanting to look dead because they feel like dying are we suppose to think they are happy.
