I kept the stump about 20 feet tall. I wish to make a Bat habitat out of it. I guess I could do it with the little branches growing but it's not as much fun =(

In one of my past jobs, we were faced with problems such as yours. What we found most effective was to apply "TRICLOPYR" (an active ingredient found in products such as "Brush-B-Gone" and "Brush Killer"....several products found at your hardware store. Triclopyr works very similar to Roundup but it doesn't work on grassy-type of vegetation.

You can probably save yourself some money by cutting the stump back again another foot or so until you find green wood and then immediately (within 15 minutes after making the cut) apply the undiluted Triclopyr with a paintbrush onto the freshly-cut surface. The reason you need to do this quickly is that the tree will begin to defend itself by emitting a liquid that will help heal the wound...therefore preventing the Triclopyr getting into the tree.

Hope this helps solve your problem. Good Luck!

To kill ANY tree, Band it. This means removing the bark around the entire perimeter of the trunk. The tree "meat", directly beneath the bark is how nutrients and water get to the branches and leaves of the tree. Without this source of nutrients, the tree will die fairly quickly, depending on how large the tree is.

I have to agree with most of the other people answering your question. Pecan trees are very expensive and you could probably do better to advertise something along the lines of "You come get the tree, it's yours". You might be surprised by the responses you get. I would NOT recommend trying to make a bat habitat out of any tree. Bats aren't really gonna go for it, you might end with a termite habitat instead.

Dead trees are also fire hazards. Depending on how close the tree is to your house, it could be disastrous.

Try digging a trench all the way around the base of the tree. Then chop out the root system with an ax. This will kill most trees. Its not guaranteed, though, since you can't reach the tap root, which usually goes straight down.

You can add a little gasoline to the trench for insurance.

Try drilling some holes around the base of it and pour gas or kerosene in the holes. The roots go a ways out from the trees. Maybe you could cut thru them and dump poison on it. Pecans sure are expensive. you sure you want to do this?

Hardware stores and garden nurseries sell 'stump killer' powders for that sort of thing. It ordinarilly requires you to drill a short hole into the center of the stump and place the powder in the hole.
