You multiply the 4/x+1 by (x+2)/(x+2), giving you 4x+8 in the numerator and (x+1)(x+2) in the denominator. For the 5/x+2 one, you multiply by (x+1)/(x+1), giving you 5x + 5 in the numerator and (x+1)(x+2) in the denominator. Now both denominators are the same, so you can add the numerators together. You end up with 4x + 8 + 5x + 5 on top and (x+1)(x+2) on the bottom. This simplifies to (9x+13)/(x-squared + 3x + 2). I don't think you can simplify more than that.

Do you mean 4 over x+1 is equal to 5 over x+2? If you do, then multiply (4 over x+1) times (x+2) on one side of the equation, then multiply (5 over x+2) times (x+1) on the other side. This will allow you to cancel both denominators, and get a much simpler problem. Good luck.
