It's not a true story but it is based on true historical family in the 17th century. So in a sense it could be true. Just like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was inspired by the true life of Ed Gein and by the way..The new Prequel to Texas Chainsaw is already being made in Austin Texas

Yes it is based on a community of cannibals that never embrased civilized ways of living. They are said to have only in-bred, because to let in outsiders would threaten the values (or lack of them) that they held in their way of living. There are said to still be families of cannibals living in rural areas that abduct and eat people. They also eat their old and sick. Pretty nasty huh?
