It all depends on what you are really after.
If all you want to do is get stoned and laid, then its a waste of money you can do that anywhere, but if you want to soak in the culture then definetly go! Plus I agree with some of the others. Holland is a small place and its really easy to go other places and see what Holland is all about. Rotterdam is also a great place.
Go by all means but don't waste your money. If you go have a really good LOOK around and don't regret your time there.

Last time I was in Amsterdam my main question was "Are there any Dutch people in Amsterdam?" Ive been to the Netherlands 2 times a year for the past 4 years and its becoming more American then half of the citys in America. Hit the musumes, see the local color. It is well worth it. And dont forget to find the Yellow Coffee Shop and ask for the house special.

It's a beautiful place full of history, nice people and wonderful attractions. If your only reason to go to Amsterdam is for sex and drugs, then you are missing the big piece of Amsterdam. I only say this because I've lived in Rotterdam, Netherlands for two years. I've traveled their twice after I've left and I loved it.
PS. Rotterdam is the next biggest city to Amsterdam and are only 20 minutes away.

You need to see all of Holland. Do visit Amsterdam. It has a great party atmosphere, relatively compact, but make sure you take quick train rides to Utrecht, the Hague, and Rotterdam. It is a good place to party. It is also a really good place to screw your life up. So... be careful.

if you want to go to buy and smoke pot in public..... spend your $$$$ on something else.
have a real vacation where you actually enjoy the scenery, architecture, culture, beaches etc.
enrich your life

I enjoy amsterdam.
but I am sick of it after a couple hours..
I prefer the more modern atmosphere of rotterdam :)
