Because they have a lot of soccer fans yet never win a world cup.

Why are there so many people cheering for the Chicago Cubs?

I don't think they are many people cheering for England, but 99% of the English do, and do it louder than others!

I have been living in Spain, UK, France and Czech Republic, and the English are really the craziest fans about soccer (and the most dangerous, according to people from the countries I lived in!). In France people don't care that much about soccer, (even if it's #1 sport), in Spain they do care big lots, but national pride is not that involved (and they drink less alcohol!). Soccer is also more social in England than in the other countries (meaning people go out to watch it together -and... drink- much more than in Spain or France for example).

The relation between national team and the country is stronger in England than in any other country I've lived in. It's very bizarre, there is a lot of national pride involved, and a great capacity of building "enemies" (Argentina, Germany, Turkey, etc.). I think the medias make a lot for that to be so big (and they also make the 1966 victory big because they didn't win anything else!).

Soccer is in their blood. Thats about it. Basketball and baseball are not big in England and the only two sports that are really huge in England and Ireland are soccer( futbol), cricket, and rugby. And also, the English clubs and leagues draw huge, and i mean huge, amounts of people to watch their games. David Beckham is bascally royalty in England, along with his wife and children.
Also, Manchester United is one of the richest clubs in the world, making about $175 million a year. Soccer is not only a sports obession in england, its a commodity. The clubs generate so much money for the country that it is no wonder that soccer is so huge there and that there are so many people supporting it. Also, english people love to drink and getting drunk and watching soccer is about as good as it gets in those english pubs.

Because there are many people with great class and fine taste - and they're the ones cheering for England...The rest of you, well, at least try to keep a positive attitude, you poor souls...

I'm not cheering for England (I support Argentina and Germany), but even I have to admit they've got some major star power on their side. Now, if they'd *use* it, we would see some very entertaining games.

They also have two of the most recognizable players in the world in Wayne Rooney and David Beckham. Beckham's global popularity alone is probably enough to explain it.
