Oedipus meets Aristotle's definition of a tragic hero...
1) Basically good person with one flaw
2) Loses everything he has due to that flaw
3) Realizes that flaw in the end and tries to redeem himself.
It is a literary theme that is echoed throughout literature, and heroes are often compared to Oedipus. Your teacher will know what you are talking about and will definitely appreciate the insight. Look up "tragic hero" and Oedipus on the web and you should get plenty of ideas.
