At 5 months of age you can start teaching him to sit up. I used the tripod sit on my son at 4 months and by 4 1/2 he was sitting. Once he could do that, he kept himself entertained for longer periods of time. To do the tripod sit, sit him up with pillows behind him in case he falls backwards, then spread his legs apart so that he can't fall forwards. This balances the weight of the body more evenly and he'll be more likely to stay that way. As he does this more and more he'll start to get better at it. Try singing Row Row Row your boat and motor his legs back and forth while doing it. Also This Little Piggy and The Itsy Bitsy Spider and good ones to do because he can feel you on him and he likes the interaction. Get one of those activity gyms that has things hanging from it and he'll play for at least 10-15 minutes. It just takes time.

I don't think he's the one who's getting bored. I think YOU are. There is so much out there for a 5 month old to take in, if you have exhausted everything already you must be some sort of Superwoman or something and I highly doubt that. Slow down Shirley, he's 5 months old! If he's this "bored" at 5 months, I can imagine his boredom at 5 years old. He's probably just overstimulated...that means you are throwing too much at him at once and its overwhelmed him. I think as first time parents we can tend to be way too pushy with our babies, they will do what they are ready to do so sit tight and enjoy the time because they are not babies for very long. Relax...and back off mom, and I'm sure he'll become a little more interested in things once more.

Honey, a five month old doesnt have an attention span. Theyre too busy learning about the world around them to play much of anything, or really pay attention to anything. They live in the moment at this age.

He needs pleanty of tummy time at this age, in small spurts. 5-15 minutes here and there, so he can work on building his core muscles by rolling over front to back and back to front.

Laying him on his back under some sort of hanging toy will help him focus his eyes and perfect his fine motor skills. Also, things that he can lay and kick are great too. Also helping him learn to sit. Prop him up between pillows or a boppy, so he can learn how to sit on his own.

Holding him and talking to him, showing him his feet and hands. Showing him books, taking him for a walk in a stroller. Anything that will expose him to his surroundings and encourage him to use his body.

Being an infant is all about the world around you. Some babies this age will cry because of colic, hunger, wetness, insecurity, or simply from frustration at not being able to control their bodies, even teething.

Just give him ample attention, things to touch and taste, noises to make, and things to see. Colors soft noises, music and lights. Things like that.

My son was the same way. You just have to wait it out & provide entertainment for him. Mine is now 7 months & very content to play by himself on the floor with his toys. Now that he can crawl, he's definately not bored!!
