Im getting my first tattoo on the 4th of july to represent a motorcycle crash that I was involved in on 3-27-06. Im getting a armband on my right arm and an angel on my accrosed my shoulders on my upper back. The total time for both will be around 4 1/2 hours. I want to know if anyone has gottin a tattoo this big before for there first one or or if you have ever gone under the gun this long. How was the pain in these areas. Would you do it again? Any kind word of incuoragement will help. Thanks guys

I have tattoos on both my arm and upper back. The one on my back was the first one I ever got and I did not think it was so bad. Kind of feels like you are being scratched by a cat. My 2nd one was on my arm. It stung a little bit more than the one on my back, but it was still not that bad. Go in expecting alot of pain and then when they actually start to do it you will be like "damn, that was all?!?" That's what I did.

Well I don't know if I can help you very much because I don't have tattoos that large, but here goes. The experience will not be as bad as you think. You'll probably be nervous at first, but after spending a few minutes under the needles you will get used to the sensation. The area around the needles will becoming numb, causing it to be less painful. I have a tattoo on my back on my right shoulder and I can tell you that that area was actually a lot less painful than the one on my lower back. But since your tattoos will be large, it might take 2 or even 3 sittings to finish everything. My stepbrother has his entire arm tattooed and it took 3 different sessions to complete. Good luck and I hope you've really thought this all through.

I assume most people that commented, didn't go under the needle as long as you will. For your 1st tattoo, that's pretty major.
It will hurt, and it will be less than expected at first. But after 2 or so hours, it's going to kill. I don't recommend taking any type of pain reliver because it will thin your blood, causing you to bleed more. When that happens, the artist has a harder time doing your tattoo & once it's healed it can look pretty bad. Eat a good meal before you go, don't drink the night before...and get a full night's rest.

Good luck!

4 1/2 hours for both sounds a little rushed.

what is the rush?

get one either back or arm and do the other later.
You've got the rest of your life to enjoy your tattoos - so uness you are shipping off to Iraq or July 5th or something, make 2 trips. Who knows, you may decide after tattoos #1 that you may want to do things differently for tattoo # 2 (more blackwork, less colour, differnt artist etc etc)

as far as the pain - it IS gonna hurt - pain is all about personal thresholds and boundaries - you may find it excruciating or not-so-bad.

ps. don't forget sunblock this summer - nothing will fade your fresh tattoo faster than sumer sun!

My first tat was two birds on my middle back area to represent my freedom. It took almost 2 hrs. And completeing it will probably be another 3.
I almost fell asleep, except my buddy kept poking me in the face. So the pain wasn't bad for me at all, but girls are supposed to have a higher pain tolerance. It really is different for everybody though.
Don't worry about it, you're just building yourself up, you'll see it's not that bad. And if it is you can take a break or make another session.

I have one. The thinner the skin, the more it hurts. I would plan on the armband first...THEN see if you feel like getting the angel.

How's the pain? It's definately no picnic. And don't think about drinking before you go in. If they smell it on you, they won't do it. See if you can get a Vicodin from someone.

And tattooing over a lymph node hurts a LOT. Expect to have adrenaline kick in from the pain. If you smoke, bring your smokes.

Arms arent really too bad except the under part. I know i have 27 tattoos. Make sure you eat before you go, preferrably something with some salt (think french fries) if you feel lightheaded, excessively hot , or dizzy, tell your artist right away so you can take a break. (moms a tattoo artist i know what i'm talking about) If you need to know anything else feel free to messenger or email me

If this is your first tattoo I highly suggest u start off small. The shoulders and back is where u are going to endure the most pain. Good luck to you tho. I advise u to do the arm first and the back and shoulder maybe a month later.
