I've heard about the freezer method... I'm gonna try that soon... but what else can I do besides pay some company upwards of $500 to repair my dead hard drive?

The freezer method and the costly sector by sector reading of your hard drive are ways to recover the data from your drive. You will likely only get a portion of it with some corruption if the freezer trick works. But the hard drive itself is not fixable, you will need to replace it, and after that it is just a question of how valuable the data on the dead drive is to you.

The drive does not get repaired. the data is extracted. If you really need the data you are stuck with it. The freezer method may work for a very short time - get a new drive, install everything, then take the frozen bad drive, connect it as a slave and try to extract the data yourself. Most of the time that will not work.

The best possible way you can fix an HD drive is if you have certification on Hardware. IF you don't then i guess you are screwed.

But, if your hard drive didn't die of an electrical faliure, then this is what you need to do.

Instert a floppy with a Formatable data system in it. Also known as a Boot disk. Turn on your computer and let it read from the Floppy drive, if your computer options aren't set to read from the Floppy drive first, then change them in the Setup system for your computer by clicking F1 or which ever is your Setup botton.

Then, format your whole HD, keep it clean. If you don't know hwo to format it read the instruction on your Bootable disk. After you format he HD, slide into your CD drive your OS system, the one you had previous or the one you want. Chenge your computer Setup to read your CD drive first, instead of your floppy drive. Then, after it reads the OS CD, your will be able to install windows once again.

If that doesn't help, then yes, throw away your HD and place a new one with a new OS system on it.

Hard drive are typical to fix, my suggestion is to get a new hard drive. hard drive can not be repair unless you do not mind deleting all your info and start all over again. If it is an virus, and access to another computer, try making an boot disk, then call the company your manufactured from and get some technical help or replace it. Go to www.tigerdirect.com or www.newegg.com and select an deal for another one, they also have an advice on repairing your hard drive.I hope this help!
