I have tried using color preserving liquid detergents.
I have tried washing them with like-colored clothes.
And
I have tried turning them inside out.
…all in cold water too.

Is there something I have been missing, or am I doomed to resort todry cleaning for life?

Always, always, wash in cold water. I use WOOLITE Dark Laundry and my darks never fade. Try to avoid the dryer too! Heat fades the colors as well.

Only wash jeans after every four wearings. If you spill something on them, spot clean. Wash inside out, cold water, mild detergent. Always wash with other darks

Dry clean if expensive, when they get older you could wash in cool water inside out with a detergent for darks. Incidentally, did the shop not have jeans in different leg lengths? i.e. marked in inches or as short, medium, long and extra long? Perhaps you missed this on the labelling.
