I've heard bad electrical-related reports about Bravadas. The gas gauge issue is probably a bad wire to the sending unit, or a bad sending unit itself. On your vehicle I believe it's located on the top side of the gas tank.
Can't help you much on the "turning the key 3 times" thing, but that's usually what's done on some vehicles to check trouble codes. Perhaps doing that clears the bad sensor trouble code from the faulty sending unit?
Take the vehicle to your local Auto Zone, Advance Auto parts, NAPA, etc. and they will hook up the vehicle to a device that will read any trouble codes and tell if you have any bad sensors, etc.
A bad oxygen sensor can cause a lot of starting problems.

It could be the sending unit, the gage itself or a wire.
