Insert your Windows XP CD and boot to it and perform a repair function...not a reinstallation. If not already set, you might need to change the Boot order for your devices...make sure the CD comes before the hard drive.
If all else fails, get a new hard drive.. install the OS on the new drive and slave the old drive...atleast you will not loose all of your documents, pics, music etc...

I had the same problem when i install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
I fixed that by formating my hard drive and reinstall the operating system.
You can also delete only Windows and install them again.
Good luck.

It may be software. Try starting in safe mode - if it starts then the problem is most likely software corruption but, just to be safe, run your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while it is in safe mode. I have seen this problem with bad ram as well, after the computer was in use for awhile. If you have a diagnostic CD, run it.

It sounds like you may have a bad sector on your hard drive..... try reformating it. If that does not work scrap it, and buy a new one. If your main concern is the information on your hard drive (which sorry to say, may not be recoverable) you have to decide how valuable this information is to you. Take it into a technician for recovery (mind you this is not cheap!)
