Banana is one of the best treat foods for rabbits. In fact, banana is one of the few foods you can give very young bunnies, and it's usually safe in that it won't give them diarrhoea. And the potassium in banana is very good for rabbits, because they don't get potassium from most of their other foods. Banana is fine for rabbits, but I wouldn't give more than a couple of slices every day or two.

Generally speaking, before six months, bunnies' main diet should be hay, water, and lucerne pellets. Some say you can begin introducing vegetables at four months, some say not until six months of age. Most importantly, when you begin to introduce vegies, you must do it VERY slowly and gradually - begin with just one slice or one very small piece of your chosen vegie or fruit, and make sure it doesn't give her diarrhoea over the next 24 hours before giving any more. Please see my website, where I've written articles on this, at

Also, NEVER give lettuce and NEVER give cabbage to rabbits - lettuce and cabbage are both very bad for rabbits, can cause diarrhoea and bloat which can kill them -

I asked my vet the same thing. Yes, it's ok as a TREAT food (every now and then and in small quantities). They are VERY high in sugar, which isn't great for the rabbit.

On the house rabbit society's website they have a list of good fruits here: http://www.rabbit.org/care/fruits.html

But they say "Sugary fruits such as bananas and grapes should be used only sparingly, as occasional treats. Bunnies have a sweet tooth and if left to their own devices will devour sugary foods to the exclusion of healthful ones."
I heard this from the person I bought the bunny from as well. She said one of her rabbits was actually addicted to sugary foods because she used to feed it to them so often, and that it refused to eat it's normal hay and pellets.

So, yes, it's fine, but just don't over stuff your bun with sugary treats!

Bananas will not harm your rabbit, per se, but do not feed too many to him. Bananas are a fruit, so many people think they must be healthy, but compared to many other fruits and vegetables, bananas have just too much sugar. So just feed bananas in moderation and try to keep variety with the fresh fruits and veggies you feed your rabbit.

Rabbits can get addicted to bananas just the way we chicks are to chocolate, but they will get to the point where they will ONLY eat bananas and nothing else, so use them very sparringly, or as a once a week treat.

Yes, but in moderation or as just a small treat. They prefere apples. Do not give them tomatos or beans. Also, have them stay away from spinach or lettace unless it's organtic. This causes them to be bloated. Make sure you give them timothy hay instead of alfafa. Alfafa hay can cause intestinal blockage.
