Birth control pills use three mechanisms to prevent pregnancy. To begin with, the pill is supposed to prevent a woman's body from releasing an egg, or ovulating, without which, of course, pregnancy would not be possible. It also works to thicken the cervical mucus, which job it is to aid the passage of the sperm to the egg, if the pill has not worked to prevent one from being ovulated. The third mechanism of the pill works as a "last resort" in the event that conception occurs by preventing the embryo from implanting in the wall of the woman's uterus. This is the reason that it is so important to take the pill at the same time each day, in order to prevent the pill's second and third mechanisms from "kicking in" and possibly causing an abortion.

Yes, birth control pills trick your body into thinking it is pregnant so you will not ovulate, however with low dosage pills an egg may be released, by continuing to take the pill the egg will not be able to implant itself in the wall of the uterus, even if it is fertilized. I freaked out when I found this out and so did my husband (didn't like the thought of a fertilized egg floating around looking for a landing spot and then getting flushed out). So my husband had a vasectomy.

Birth control pills contain synthetic hormones (estrogen and progesterone). These hormones regulate the functions of certain organs in your body. They basically keep you from releasing an egg so you can't get pregnant. They also make your cervical mucous thick, making it hard for sperm to swim up to your fallopian tube and fertilize an egg. I also believe if you do conceive, implantation of the fertilized egg in your uterus is difficult. And yes, they make the body think it's pregnant and that's why you don't release an egg.

If I remember right, it destroys the egg so that when you ovulate, there isn't a real egg to impregnate. I'm not sure though. Google it. I am sure there are tons of pages out there saying it.

they basically take giving your body the hormones that it usually makes on its own such as estrogen and progesterone. It also fakes your body out into "thinking" it is pregnant, so then your ovaries don't drop an egg each month. and there you have it! :)
