It varies, depending on factors such as pitch speed, age, and league. The "standard" seems to be considered at either 43 or 46 feet, however, from sportsknowhow.com:
"For adult slow pitch this distance can range from 35 to 53 feet. For fast pitch softball the measurement is more likely 35 to 40 feet."

Andy M has it correct (as correct as it can get). It depends some on what sanction you are playing under.
In addition to what has been given,
NCAA Womens is 43 feet,
NFHS (high school) is 40 feet EXCEPT in a couple of states who are testing the 43 foot distance. Look for all NFHS to be 43 by 2008.
ASA 18 under GOLD division is 43 feet.
Most all above 10 under is 40, below is 35.

you said from the mound, that depends on how big the mound is. But from the rubber its 60 feet.

mens-46ft
womens elite teams 43ft.
also note theres no "mound" in softball just a pitching area

Adult
Men: 46 ft.
Women: 43 ft.
Under 18
Men: 46 ft.
Women: 40 ft.
Under 15
Men: 46 ft.
Women 40 or 35 ft.
Slow Pitch:
Adult
Men: 50 ft
Women: 46ft
Under 18
Men: 46 ft
