Actually it's called a recessive trait. Much like a brunette child coming from Blonde parents, traits can skip one generation only to show up in the next. Most likely one of your grandparents is left handed and they passed it on to you but not your mom or dad.

hmm. First of all I'd go do a little DNA testing just to make sure everything is as it should be. All it boils down to really is that they are naturally better at writing in arabic and throwing curve balls then you are. If that's not important to you then forget about it.

Current research suggests that handedness is determined in utero. In other words, during development there are environmental factors that determine handedness while you are still in your mother's womb. It's more environmental than heritable.
