Hi this site covers the Buda side:
http://www.tompgalvin.com/places/hu/budapest_buda.htm
and this site the Pest side (both with pics)
http://www.tompgalvin.com/places/hu/budapest_pest.htm
this will let you make your own selection as answerer #1 suggested. However, since you asked for opinions:
1) I have to agree with the two answerers who put Buda Castle first. Set in the "old town" with Matthias Church and the Fisherman"s Bastion (a 19th c. addition) I suppose you could make the whole "old town" one (very long) thing to do. Aside from all the sites and cafes, there are art museums and cavern/ wax museum in the castle grounds, so a lot to do.
2) On the Pest side, I also have to agree about the Parliament House (late 19th c. gothic and only open when Parliament is not in session.) The building is O.k., but since 2000 the royal regalia of St. Stephen (founder of the Hungarian state) is on view in the Parliament building. The regalia is more than just jewels, it has a long and unusual history:

3) For something surprising try having a dinner at Gundel's in the park:
http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Hungary/Budapest_Fovaros/Budapest-436839/Restaurants-Budapest-Gundel-BR-1.html
this was the most famous restaurant in Budapest under the old Austo-Hungarian empire. Since the 1990s it has been rebuilt and revitalized to its old splendor.
Where ever you decide to go, have a good time.

An absolute must is going to a pastry shop. You can try the super famous touristy Gerboud on Vorosmarty square. For something lower key and a place where locals go, try Cafe Europa on St. Istvan Ave.

If you go to this map page:
http://www.wikimapia.org/#y=47504446&x=19050121&z=15&l=0&m=h
then search for "cafe europa" under WikiMapia>Search Places then it will show it to you.

For a surprise, check out a recent memorial on the Pest side of the Danube. Do a search for "holocaust memorial danube" and the map will center around it. I won't spoil the surprise.

the bastion and the castle. a boat trip on the danube and the flashers in hero's park! my mate saw a guy doing stretching exercises and changing his shorts every two minutes and a guy having a good time with himself openly in the park. it must be a local ritual. Budapest is very very expensive. the spa is a nice day out too.

Parliament Building, Citadella, Royal palace, Margaret island, Heroes Square, Vaci Utca, and if you are interested in shopping, don't miss the Westend City Mall right behind the Nyugati Railway Station. Have fun, it is one of the most beautifull cities

-in Buda, you have to go to the castle to watch the wonderful view of the Danube and the bridges, go to fisher's bastion, have a look at St Mathias Church.
-heroes square (there are also 2 huge art museums if you're interested)
- the Parliament (the visit is really short)
- there is the Margeret Island
....
And I advice you to go to bath, it's wonderful!
You should try the most famous and typical wine in Hungary "tokaj"

Have a nice trip!

I definitely agree that Gerboud is a must. Also, for a bit of historical culture, take a drive out to the Szoborpark: http://www.szoborpark.hu/
