I have 2 painted turtles and they are both in doors in separted tanks. I feed mine mealworms, baby shrimp, and pellets. My female love's fly's but my male hate's them. Try different foods. The eat meat and veggies. Don't worry about the weather they will dig a hole to hibernate.

If you put actual turtle food out he'll eat it. You can get it at almost any pet store. There is some extra fortified kind that I use to feed a turtle in my yard and he got so big we had to move him to a lake across town. As for winter, if you don't have a nice warm pond for him to crawl into and hide then i recommend setting him a personal resort in your garage. If he's still small a 10 gallon tank with a mixture of rocks and water would be great. If he's bigger then it's tricky because it's either a kiddy pool and some rocks, or just hoping he makes it through the winter.

It can eat any kind of veggies like lettuce, tomato's and carrots and they eat crickets and worms, too. You can get turtle food at the pet shop. You'll have to bring it in in the winter so it can hibernate. Get a small aquarium and give it something to get under (like a piece of wood or small piece of carpet) and some water. It will be a lot less active in the winter.

PS It would probably like a water source that it can actually get into, like a large shallow bowl.

Painted turtles have to be underwater to swallow. The eat mostly fish scraps and other dead things you would find in a pond. Their favorite treat is earthworms. One easy thing to feed them is non breaded popcorn shrimp, or fake crab meat. Several pellets are available at pet stores for them. Some prepare special hibernation place for there turtles indoors, but that is tricky. I keep my turtles active all year.

The first thing is. Don't bring wild animals home. I've saved turtles from the road too. But I just move them to safety and let them go. If you're going to keep them you have to set up a proper area from him. Check out the care sheets on this page http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/1caresheets.htm This will point you in the right direction. Next time please don't bring wild animals home with you.

It needs a pond- it will only eat in the water. It eats fish, water bugs, worms, etc. and in the winter it would burrow in the mud to hibernate.

Please consider releasing it back to its own habitat.

If you want to try to care for it, here are a couple links:
