Unless you do a lot of travelling, the desktop is better. There's too much playing around with the mouse button on a laptop. You could always hook up a mouse to the laptop and then it wouldn't make any real difference.

The really good thing about desktop PC's is that parts are more freely available and are easier to install than laptops

Depends, are you a student or a businessman??? If so, then go for the notebook, that way you can have all of your files on hand and you dont have to carry around a actual paper notebook or a bulky binder.
Now if you are just a regular guy who works a retail job so to say, then buy the desktop.
But me personally, I went for the laptop. I absolutely love it! it is completely portable, it has wireless internet already installed in it, so I can go to a cafe and hook up online, i can do anything with this. It is a little more expensive than a desktop, but I like it alot better!!!

these days? i'd say probably a laptop... my new pc is one... and its pretty much all the computer i need, which certainly wasnt the case last time i was buying (got a tower desktop instead).

though it does of course depend on the use you want to put it to. if you're a gamer or a desktop publisher / electronic artist a desktop is still a better bet, for most other things the lappy's more practical. Takes up less space in your life, e.g. on your cluttered desk or in the bedroom (no separate system box, speakers or mouse - just screen and keyboard block), quieter, and uses far less power. Processing power, memory, storage space and connectivity simply aren't the issues they used to be, neither are screen size, resolution or quality (as the same panels now get used both for mobile and desktop screens!). The keyboards went through a bad patch but are back on fine form, and of course even the bulkiest laptop can be folded up and carried around - and used with wireless internet - with relative ease compared to a desktop. Plus even a pretty good one is dirt cheap compared to any time in the past!

I have heard that desktop computers tend to give users less trouble. I think the decision might depend partially on your age and on your lifestyle. If you do not move a lot, you probably would find a desktop more ideal for personal use. However, if you frequently change residences, a laptop would be easier to transport and would not require the same installation considerations. Much as well would depend on the treatment and handling either type of item received. I think desktops tend to be cheaper to purchase. They may be a bit hardier.

Depends on usage. If you are planning on traveling a lot and using it a lot in a mobile environment, then a notebook is the best bet.

If you want to use it more for gaming and stationary tasks get a desktop. The simple answer is to get the type of computer that you are going to get the most enjoyment out of.
