wow...thanks Jenn for setting these people straight. "six" is an adjective (it describes pups, which is a noun); "happily" is an adverb (it descibes followed, which is a verb); "Scruffy" is a noun (it's the dog's name, and should be capitalized).

sheesh don't they teach parts of the sentance anymore? Happily is an adverb not an adjective. Six is the adjective because it describes how many pups.

"Six" is the adjective modifying the noun, "pups".
("Happily" is an adverb, modifying the verb, "followed". And, Scruffy needs a capital.)

Six
I am pretty sure it is called a numerical adjective because it qualifies how many. It might also be referred to as a quantitative adjective.
Numerical adjectives take three forms:
Cardinal - represent the actual numbers themselves such as one, two, three . . .
Ordinal - used for ranking and indicate position such as first, second, third . . .
Multiplicative - deal with proportions such as double, triple, quadruple, multiple . . .
