I'm so sorry to hear that.

It is the best thing for your horse, which is why you are doing it. That in itself speaks for the love of your horse. His quality of life would be quite low, given the pain he'd be in.

Spend as much time with him as possible - lots of grooming, carrots (or other favorite treat!) That morning, cut a bit of his tail & have it braided - there is a great place called "Twisted Tails" that makes beautiful bracelets!

You may want a memorial place for him - a rock or tree & a marker of some kind. I had made a cast stone of a friend's horse's hoof the night before he was put down (founder), and gave it to her the next day. It's now out by his "garden", and is a gentle reminder of him, and the great days they had!

See if you can get a copy of "The Rainbow Bridge" poem - it'll help get you through!

Many blessings to you & your horse!!! (((hugs)))

I would ask the vet, and if he thinks your horse is in pain and suffering then I would have him put down. If the vet doesn't think he is suffering in anyway and he seems happy then I wouldn't go through with it. I had my horse put down about a year ago. He was 36 years old, and one day he laid down and wouldn't get back up. So I know how hard it is to make the choice you have to make. The best thing I can tell you is it is all up to you. And know one else should make the decision for you. It is a very hard thing to do. So I am so sorry that you have to make this choice and I hope that the you can deal with it in a way that is easy for you. I am so sorry, and I hope that someday you can find a new horse that you will love just as much as the one you love now.

I am so sorry.

You know that you are doing the right thing. (I have four horses). We took horses out of the wild and trained them. They haul us around, and do "tricks" to make us happy. They become our friends, our family, and we don't want to let them go. You have to remember that we (people) took these great animals out of the wild. In the wild, a pack of wolfs would do what needs to be done. They would take down an injured animal, and end the suffering. Well, we took THAT away from the horse to. It wouldn't be fair to the horse to keep him around if it only meant that he would suffer. Just be grateful that you got the chance to know and love him. Who knows, maybe your Dad will meet him in heaven and they will both meet you one day at the pearly gates (with cowboy hats on)!

Best wishes. You are doing the right thing.

I am so sorry that you have to make this decision. I too am a horse-lover. I don't know your situation, but if possible try to get an opinion from every equine veterinarian you know or have heard of. Equine surgeons are very good these days and I hope their is a good one at least a couple hours away or closer that you can talk to before continuing. Once again I am sorry.

Yes u are doing the right thing. spend every last moment with him as you can and you need to be there with him when they put him to sleep so he knows you didn`t abandon him and that you still love him. I know how hard this is for you because i have a horse to and i would die if i had to lose him, but this is the best for him is he can`t even walk, and i am guessing he can`t even go to pasture so he is probably miurable to, so this is the best thing for him, and you need to be there for him up till the last moment so he knows just how much you love and care for him!

If you have talked to your veterinarian and there is nothing else that you can do to help him it is the best thing. I know it's hard. I was forced to get rid of my last horse that I Tully loved and it was very hard and just found out that he might have to be put down because he has really bad Nevicular that they just discovered. You will cry I know I did and he isn't even my horse but if you really love him you will end his pain. If you really need to talk I'm here feel free to say hi. It always helps to be able to talk to someone who has gone through it.

If there is nothing else you can do for him than it is the right thing, even though it may not feel like it. But I agree get at least another vets opinion, if at all possible. And if you can't research it one the internet, maybe there is a treatment that you haven't even heard of that can help. But if there isn't spend all your time with him and make him as comfortable as possible. And when he is put down be with him.

You are doing the right thing cause you don't want them to suffer. Its weird but I would get another one right away. It has always helped me in the past!

have you talked to your vet? in some areas there are places who do horse "rescue" where they keep animals like yours until they are in too much pain... I dont know how bad your horse is but your vet has seen him and wil give you best advise
I am sorry about your horse.. whisper to him "Go in Peace"
