The membranes you are talking about are between the cervix and your amniotic sac. Stripping them can cause irritation, which causes the uterus to contract. It can also help the cervix to start dialation and effacement. It isn't a guarentee that labor will start, although if you are already dialated some, it can help the process get going faster.
You may have some spotting and cramping along with stripping the membranes, so don't worry if you see a little blood. Your mucous plug will more then likely have been dislodged in the process, so don't worry if you see a lot of mucous in the next little while, or few days.
The best thing you can do now is walk, walk, walk. If you are cramping, then walking may get contractions going really well. Walking also helps bring the babies head down into position for delivery and can help with dialation and effacement.
Good luck!! I hope things move along fast for you!!!

I was involved in a discussion about this last week where some women were debating whether or not it was effective. For the most part, it seemed like if the baby is ready, you'll be contracting very soon after the membranes or stripped. Apparently, stripping the membranes causes certain hormones to be released that trigger labor. If the baby and your body aren't ready nothing will happen. Incidentally, the woman who brought the topic up had her membranes stripped that day and did have her baby a couple of days afterwards.

There are three membranes on your cervix. An outer, middle muscular layer which helps during delivery and an inner which women shed each month normally. Stripped membranes? Did a doctor do this or was it a natural occurence. Sounds painful.

Stripping the membrane is just a simple thing the doctors can do to help ripen your cervix a little. When I was approaching my due date with my son, my doctor did it for me to see if it would help put me into labor. All they do is, while they are "checking" you at your appointment, they sort of "scrape" along your cervix with their fingers....
It didn't work for me...my son came out 8 days late! But I have heard it working for other women...although it could just be a coincidence. Good Luck!! =)

Your cervix is blocked by a mucous plug during the early part of pregnancy. As you get closer to giving birth the plug falls out because the crevix is thinner and you start to dialate.
I would suggest you always ask your Dr. what they are doing and why. Good Luck and Have a Happy baby!

this means that your doctor "stripped" your cervix, meaning they took some of the tissue away and helped make the cervix thinner, which helps towards delivery. You will probably spot for a little while, as long as the discharge is not bright red you're fine! You're on your way to having that baby! way to go!

It means they sperate the layer between the cervix and the sac and it will likely make you bleed. Sometimes it helps to speed up the labor process if you are already dialted. I had it done three times with my daughter and she didn't budge. It has worked for some people.

its basically a really rough exam, means that the doctor stuck his finger into your opening cervix and moved it around a bit, what this does is gets your cervix irritated so that is starts softening and effacing more and then your labor starts a little faster than it is.

that means...only a few hours or days til you have your baby!!!! The doctor stripped the tissue from your cervix. Breaking your water is something completely different.
