no, it does not make the batteries last longer ... and, if you freeze them they will leak corrosive acid everywhere ... and it doesn't smell good either ;o)

According to these sources, storing batteries in the freezer (or refrigerator) will make them last longer, but it depends on what kind of battery you're using. And in the long run, it may not be worth the hassle.

For alkaline batteries (the most common kind of household battery), putting them in the freezer will extend their shelf life by less than 5%. And cold batteries can't be used immediately -- you have to wait until they've warmed up to room temperature first. If you need those batteries for a flashlight in an emergency, this could prove problematic. When stored at room temperature, alkaline batteries retain 90% of their power, and the average shelf life of alkaline batteries is five to seven years.

Most batteries depend on chemical reactions to transmit charges. Since chemical reactions can be slowed, stopped or sped up by a change in temperature (Adding and subtracting energy of activation) it makes sense that a battery's shelf life can be extended.

From what I heard (and remember) from a high school class, that only reduces the internal resistence of the battery (as long as it is still cold) giving it an extra last breath.

Nope they don't, also the show mythbusters on the discovery channel did that myth. And found out that they didn't last any longer.
So proving that they don't, but I have no idea what season they did it though?

If you like to find out check out discovery's website.
