The more important thing is getting a great bronzer brush. It should be shorter, with more compact bristles- more of a "hard" brush, a regular powder brush is too soft and will not distribute the powder properly. There is a great inexpensive one at target, made by the target brand, for about 5.00, or you can look at sephora, where they have many options, and a good one by the sephora brand for 25.00.
As far as bronzers go, I prefer a matte powder for everyday use so it doesn't look so obvious it's not a natural tan. Instead of using an allover shimmery bronzer, highlight with a shimmery pink or gold powder in certain areas.
I also think it's better to use a powder that is simply made for people with darker/more tan skin, rather than a bronzer. It looks more natural. You will have to try a few to find the one that works for your skin.
It doesn't have to be expensive to work either. I use the Flirt! brand cosmetics face powder in "Bodacious Beige" for my bronzer (I'm very, very pale naturally) and it works great, plus it is only 10.00!

If you have some extra $$ to spend, buy NARS bronzer in Laguna. That is the best bronzer I've ever used. Makes you tan but still looks very natural. Right now I can't afford it so I'm using Physician's Formula bronzer in Sunlight. It's the kind with bronzer in the bottom of the compact and a little shimmer powder in the center. Really makes my face glow and looks natural, not orangey. The only downside is you have to apply more product in order for it to show up as well as the NARS did.

I absolutely love, love, love these, all of which are available at Sephora or sephora.com:
1. Benefit Hoola (a true brown, which is great for us pink-tinged gals)
2. CARGO Bronzer in Medium (a gorgeous shimmering brown that looks phenomenal on olive skin)
3. Guerlain Terra Cotta Lights in Brunettes 02 (with a titch of peach for shading)
4. NARS Laguna (one of the best sellers on the market)

A great low-priced bronzer is by Rimmel. It actually won awards from readers of magazine polls. At around $5.00 you can't go wrong plus it comes in 3 shades.

bronzer beeds use a conceiler for any noticable blemishes then use a bronzer beed or powder that you put on with a big blush brush so it looks more natural and not caked on.

Mary Kay has bronze loose powder. But if you are looking to use bronze as a highlighter, Mary Kay also has bronze highlighting powder. Being a Mary Kay beauty consultant, I can't say enough about their products. They are wonderful!

The Body Shop Brush-on Bronze. It comes in pearls in three different shades, so if you use a big enough brush, the effect looks completely natural.
