when the truth could hurt somebodys feelings and the lie would spare them from that and not cause any real harm

Never.

As for the, its OK to lie to get out of trouble, its not. If you do something that could get you in trouble, then you deserve to get in trouble. There is a solution, don't do stupid ****, then its not a problem.

For the saving peoples feelings, that's a load of crap too. The truth is always the best answer. If the truth will hurt someones feelings, they just need to toughen up. The lie can cause more pain than hiding the truth.

You don't have to tell everyone everything you know.

You can just decline to comment.

at the same time because it is in the character of evil to be secret, the prohibition against uttering falsehoods isn't absolute. maximum respondents have at a loss for words 2 comparable issues in this question. there's a super distinction between some situation's being ethical and its being morally permissible. A lie continually runs afoul of the ethical concept to communicate the reality. As such no lie is ethical. in spite of the indisputable fact that, there are circumstances wherein different ethical responsibilities outweigh the job to be trustworthy. the trouble-free occasion of it is hiding a Jewish kinfolk from the Nazis. whilst the SS knocks on your door and asks once you're hiding all and sundry, you're morally accepted to lie because of the fact your accountability to maintain existence and uphold justice take priority in this situation. The lie itself is immoral, yet is morally permissible. so which you're able to be clean on what you mean by utilising 'ok'. in case you mean "Is it ever ethical to lie" then the respond isn't any. in case you mean "Is it ever morally permissible to lie" then the respond is specific.

It's never okay to lie, but if a friend asks a question, like, "Do I look fat in this?", you can answer in a kind way, "Well, it's not the most flattering outfit on you." if she does look fat. You can be honest without being rude. If your spouse asks you if you have been cheating, you have to reply with the truth. He/She deserves that!
