Well, the way you put it right there is a bit of a stereotype. You don't know each and every person you see dresssed as a goth individually, do you?

I think in this day and age it's more of a style-setter than a way of life or anything like that. It's possible they just like the look of the clothes, and aren't trying to be somebody they're not. You can still dress like a goth even if you don't want to be one. It's a free world (for the most part).

I agree that yes, some of them are so-called "posers" or are just trying to fit in with a crowd they don't particularly want to be a part of. Some of them do it for attention, others do it because it's their way of life, and others just because they like the clothes. Simple as that.

More often than not, they are anti-social. And most often that is the result of feeling rejected. That's why they hang out in the downtown areas and plop them selves in the middle of the sidewalk so people have to step over them. They desperately desire social interaction and inclusion. The fear of rejection causes them to create an ambivalent persona and project an image of uniqueness; and often superiority.

Only a small fraction of the population dresses goth, so it actually is individualistic. It is also a fashion statement of protest. They are avoiding dressing like Wal-Mart or Saks mannequins. Interesting question. Thanks !
