Ritualistic Burning????
Here's an interesting story:
My dad was a Carolina Gamecocks fan. Back in the 80s, my brother (an avid soccer player at the time) attended a soccer camp at Clemson University--his whole team went to this week-long camp. My Brother returned home wearing the bright orange t-shirt that was given to all of the campers. Dad wouldn't let him in the house until he took off the shirt and threw it in the trash. My brother was very sad about losing the keepsake he had so recently gotten. Dad, feeling bad about all of this, wrote a letter explaining the story to the Head Coach of the South Carolina Soccer team, and a week or so later, a youth-sized authentic Soccer Jersey arrived in the mail. I think my brother still has that shirt folded neatly in his closet.
As Jerry Seinfeld observed, rooting for a sports team is nothing more than rooting for laundry. Players come and go; coaches come and go; and winning seasons and losing records come and go. The one thing that remains the same is the uniforms--the team's name and colors.
If one of your relatives gives you a rival's t-shirt, then you must never wear it... don't wear the laundry that you wouldn't root for in a game!

I would keep it but never wear it. I have an Auburn jersey from a conference in college. I am an alumni of Alabama. I keep the jersey, but it stays in the closet where it belongs.

Eagles fan here. Got a Cowboys t-shirt for my birthday and immediately used it as an oil rag. I even made sure it didn't touch my truck. I still have it.

I wouldn't wear it but I would figure it was some joke. Not going to give it back, just thank them.
