I managed to cure myself, but only because I was able to love myself enough to do it. I'm really that great!

Is Narcissism Curable

2016-11-12 05:07:39 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

Narcissism is a personality disorder, and by definition, personalities are highly resistant to change in adults. Yes, it is possible to learn new behaviors and ways of interpreting the world and experiences so that they are not pathological. However, it generally takes a long time to accomplish (as a year or more of therapy at least weekly).

Don't expect a cure from a prescription. Long-term talk therapy is the path to reconstructing personality.

Sadly after 35 years as a Psychologist I have to admit that Narccissim is not curable, but can only be modified. Most
narcissists that I have tried to help were also ''borderline'' personalilties and never had the ego strength to confront their shadows and demons. They treated people as ''objects,'' from not ever allowing themselves to be intimate nor vulnerable. The closer you try to help them, the more they will shut-down.
I have never worked with a true narcissist that recognize their inability to love.

No. It is a fundamental mindset. All that one can do is alter the outward expression of their narcissism so that others don't have to suffer with them.

The resistance to change and resistance in any form stands only when it is successful. The moment one has started thinking it has to be cured he has come to a conclusion that he is not in a win-win situation. Naturally strength/weakness chart has to be prepared and convert all weaknesses into strength, you will forget thinking about narcissism.

Take it from a narcissism specialist: no.

They'd have to REALLY WANT to change, and even then it's a hard battle.

I work with a girl who I would say has this. I think the only thing that would cure her would be a visible scar - for now she thinks she's God's answer to beauty. Ugh.

yes, but it will take a while. the person will have to be cognizant enough to accept the fact that he/she is indeed having that type of personality disorder. what will follow will be the tedious psychotherapies, etc. it can be frustrating 'coz we are dealing with ego dystonic behavior.
