Have you every smelled it? Cats are not stupid that cant take the odor either, there are clean animals.

It's instinctive. Female cats are more likely to do so than males, because they leave their territory to pooh and they don't want it to be obvious.
If they are obvious it might lead a male to her litter which is very likely to result in the death of her kittens and her getting injured.
Very domesticated cats can become lazy but most females will still bury/cover it, males tend to be less wary and therefore less likely to cover it.

MrC, I am going to have to disagree with you. I have three cats two males and one female, both my male cats cover their crap up, but my female cat doesn't.
I don't know the reason why, it's really hard to say. I have two that do and one that doesn't. It stinks no matter if they cover it or not.

to hide them from nasty dogs who eat them. Ever seen a dog eat a turd sprinkled in kitty litter...........It will make you hurl to hear the crunching sound. UGH

It smells so bad they can't stand it either. Nah, my opinion is it is just the way God made them.
