Here's the correct answer... it all depends on what features are more important to you. Although there were a couple of intake gasket-related recalls on the Grand Prix, it performs better than the Cavalier. However, if performance is not your main objective, the Cavalier gets better gas mileage, it's easier to service and is cheaper to maintain. For a daily driver around town, I'd go with the Cavalier... if you want something with more zip in exchange for a little less MPG, the Grand Prix is the way to go.

Hope this helps.

The Pontiac Grand Prix would most likely be safer because it is a larger car. However, neither the Grand Prix nor the Cavalier are highly ranked in Consumer Reports' testing. If you are buying your car for safety and reliability alone, then be safe and go with an import. I know that 1995-ish Toyota Corollas, if driven safely and not abused, have 30+ MPG after ten years. Toyotas and Hondas also are designed with the customer in mind.

The cavalier would be more reliable, the grand prix has had too many problems and one of problems is a major fix unless its been fixed before. Sorry i cant remember the exact problem on the prix just its very pricy and labor time calls for 6-8 hrs to fix it. So really i would go with the cavalier as long as its updated on maintence and everthing

Pontiac Grand Prix, I would personally get a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic of the same era due to their reliability records.

I like the Grand Prix better, but honestly, Pontiacs are notorious for having lots of problems. The Chevy will last forever, no doubt.

the 3.4l in the grand prix has a horrible lower intake manifold gasket, and head gasket. at about 75k miles kiss em bye bye. i dont know if the 3.8 has the same problem. i would go with the cavalier. and if you can get the 2.2l ecotec, your really in good shape. better gas millage with the cavalier also. personally i think the grand prix is a boat. and the cavalier is a girls car. thats why i got a grand am. perfect in between car. oh and i replaced my gaskets before i had any trouble with them.

how can you put those in the same sentence. there is so much difference between those 2 cars. the grand prix is about 10x better. I love chevy, but i have cavaliers.

I would go with the GP. I currently have a cavalier and I am not impressed. Cavaliers are known for having rear brake problems due to a poor design. In addition many cavaliers are known to have electrical problems. I suggest you spend the extra money and get a GP. My wife has a GP and we both love it. If the GP is a 3.8L make sure it had the intack gasket replaced. It is in a GM none safetly related recall.
