my friend is a having a baby in a few weeks. What should I get her as a baby gift? She is not finding out the sex of the baby, so I can't just go blue or pink, any suggestions?

One item no one else will probably get her is a climbers mini headlamp. Yes, it is one of the most indispensable items I used for my last two and really wish I had for the first. Why you ask? The little led lamps have just enough light to change diapers in the middle of the night, but don't seem to disturb baby much. Anything to keep them asleep! Maybe put a newborn baby sling on your list as well. I like the New Native one. At least you can walk around the house and get things done for a little while. Baby washcloths and towels are always useful and don't have to be blue or pink. Good luck!

Here's a list of the gifts I got I found the most useful...

1. Diapers (I personally like Pampers Swaddlers)
2. Wipes
3. Baby On Board Sign
4. Baby clothes (yellow, white, green...etc) Also you can buy big
sizes. Most people buy newborn clothes... you can buy 6-9
month clothes that tha baby can use later...
5. A friend sent me flowers to the hospital and the vase is a
little box where you can then put the baby picture. This can
help decorate the room.
6. I also received a gift set that had ceramic boxes for
the "First Tooth" and the "First Curl" also "The First Piggy
Bank" and the box itself can be used to colect other items
and/or photos.
7. If you can't decide, a gift certificate or gift card for baby
stores is always good... Toys R Us, Baby Gap, Sears, JC
Penney, etc...
8. A subscription to a good magazine like "American Baby"
or "Baby Center"
9. You can buy a silver rattle (very classy) or just any toy or a
sterling silver spoon...
10. Also a original cute gift is the set sold at many store to make
the hand and foot prints of the baby ...

Hope this helps ! !

If it's for the mom - think outside the box. How about a gift certificate for a massage or a pedicure. Or a gift certificate to a nice little cozy place to eat with the offer to babysit the little one while they're gone.
If you can, maybe offer to come over at night once or twice during the first few weeks to listen for/take care of the baby - even if she's breastfeeding - she doesn't have to get up for the in between feeding stuff, and every minute of sleep is a gift in and of itself.

for the mom i would put together some meals that can be frozen and then reheated whenever they want to use them! New parents don't really feel like cooking, it is such a big help!!! As for the baby, a little kit of bath stuff, a hooded towel, wash cloths, baby soap, shampoo, lotion and nail clippers are wonderful gifts!!

My husbands Aunt made us a Scrap book and all I had to do was put the pictures in it. That was by far the best gift that I received because she put a lot of time and effort into it. She had a page for first day home, first bath in the tub. First Holidays.ect... I think it is a great gift idea.

Make up a coupon booklet to give her. Offer to watch the baby for 2 hours so she can nap. Offer to babysit when he/she's older so the parents can have a night out. Offer to sit & talk with her about movies, news, the weather, etc, adult chat, not about diapers, wipes, poopy diapers & other baby related things. Offer a hug. Offer a foot massage or shoulder massage, maybe a coupon for both. Offer to take her out to get a pedicure and/or manicure without the baby.

You can come up with others too. I got a few of these coupon booklets when I had my son. I thought they were awesome & cashed them in for the next year. The best one was from my mom. Her first coupon that I cashed in was she offered to take my son out of my room to let me sleep in for 2 hours while she read the paper, had her coffee & got ready for work. He got Grammy time & I got much needed sleep! By the time she was leaving for work, he was ready for another bottle & his morning nap.

A baby book. Very important to have you tend to forget stuff. A baby book will let you right and fill things out and remember it down the line.

A trip to the spa for her and a whole lot of diapers (Pampers Swaddlers work the best in my view). A Diaper Genie, hooded towels for the baby...oh there is so much!

Something that makes the Mom feel good...all the attention is usually centered around the new baby. Something relaxing might be more appreciated that something else - like a pedicure or an offer to babysit so she can get out for an hour..
