I'm not sure either, but I have some guesses. I think hatred is too strong a word; best to say rivalry.

Illinois people drive fast! Which makes us Wisconsinites jealous, because if we get it up over 60, we're sure to be pulled over. So we admire and are resentful of their carefree speeding. And some of us are old farts who feel we're racing at 55 mph (not me of course).

Illinois people are rich! Another stereotype to be sure, but it sometimes looks and feels true.

To sum it up, it's like Country Mouse and City Mouse.

Being a native of Illinois and later a full-time resident of Wisconsin, I can assure you that "hate" is too strong a word. It is just a harmless rivalry. This time of the year I hear a lot of flap about the dreaded "flatlanders" invading our pristine wilderness. Actually most of us realize that tourists keep our taxes down while improving what would be a depressed economy.

I am from Lake Geneva and it seems that lots of people from there think that Illinois people are rude and really bad drivers. But Lake Geneva is a tourist town and in the summer it seems like 9/10 of the people there are from lllinois. People just get fed up by them. People from lllinois do bring a good economy to L.G. though.
