I really don't know, but I'll tell you a movie that is intense and scary too... "The Hills Have Eyes." That movie is crazy, intense, gory, scary, etc. I think it's because it could happen to any of us on a road trip on an unfamiliar road ("shortcut").
... I think it's one of the scariest movies in a while...

Silence of the Lambs. It was real enough that it could really happen. It took me about five years to see Anthony Hopkins in a favorable light again - and he's one of my favorite actors.
