I know nothing about the Ukraine. I am not from there and I've never been there. So, here's a truly unbiased (and probably ignorant) answer:

The "bread basket" of the former Soviet Union the history books tell us. So, I imagine a more wealthy region in an area that has had its troubles.

On television, there are lovely old buildings that are nicely kept. The people seem to be friendly and they have a strong cultural identity (fiercely independent?).

I've been there four times and I enjoy it quite a bit. Kiev is a very modern city, and Berdyansk (where I usually go to) is great for summer vacations.

Ukraine is, in my opinion, a country that has an enormous opportunity for market growth, but corruption and the fact that they are unable to privatize all their industries (i.e. going from a communist nation to a market economy) will hold them back for years to come.
