It bascially works to dye the top layer of your skin. So, as skin cells shed off, so does the color. So, anything you do to make this skin rub off faster, such as shower, shave, exfoliate, etc it will last a shorter and shorter amount of time. It lasts usually 2-3 days, getting lighter everytime you shower or bathe.
You can get Mystic tans that last about a week. Also, you can buy a lotion at the tanning place that will make you Mystic last a little longer.
Body lotion with a slight amount of color is a good way to go. You apply it every day like a lotion and in about a week, you have a good tan. Also, since it is a gradual tan, it goes on smoother with less mistakes.

It really depends on the type of lotion and how dark your "fake" tan is. If you have used the lotion for a while and have gotten a dark tan, the tan will slowly fade, but it will last longer. Most lotions last for a few weeks. I say mix your "fake" tan with a natural tan. The "fake" tan will give you a boost with time, but the natural tan will last longer.

Tanning lotions are a subsitute to getting a real tan. But it beats having to get skin cancer by using these products.
